Best dog beds for Goldendoodles in 2026

A Goldendoodle bed has to do four jobs: hold the dog comfortably, survive a coat that sheds even when the breed claims it does not, fit the room aesthetically, and wash without falling apart. Here are the beds Mango actually sleeps on, the ones we'd buy if we were starting again, and the bed shopping mistakes most new doodle owners make.

What size bed does a Goldendoodle need?

Mini Goldendoodles (under 25 lbs) usually need a small or medium bed. Medium Goldendoodles (30 to 45 lbs, like Mango) want a medium or large. Standard Goldendoodles (50 to 80 lbs) want a large or extra large. The dog should be able to lie fully stretched on the surface without limbs hanging off.

Doodles also "donut sleep" curled into themselves, so a slightly larger bed beats a snug fit. The donut shape needs space to form. Buy one size up from what the brand recommends.

Best plush bed for Goldendoodles: P.L.A.Y. Pet

P.L.A.Y. Pet (Pet Lifestyle and You) builds the dog beds the doodle community quietly recommends most. The Original Lounge Bed has memory foam, a removable washable cover, and a print catalog deep enough to match almost any room. The Snuggle Bed is the bolster version for dogs who like to lean their head against something.

Pick P.L.A.Y. for the bed your dog actually uses every single night. Their fabrics are scuff resistant, the seams hold up to the dig and rearrange ritual, and the prints stay sharp through dozens of washes. Made from recycled fibers too, which we like.

Best minimalist bed for Goldendoodles: Wild One

Wild One makes the bed you put in the living room when the bed itself is part of the room design. The Crate Pad and the Pet Bed are simple, neutral, and the kind of pieces that disappear into the aesthetic. The cover is removable and washable, the foam holds shape, and the colorway range is intentional rather than chaotic.

Pick Wild One when you care about the room as much as the comfort. The Tan and Spruce colors are particularly good for golden coats.

Best orthopedic bed for senior Goldendoodles

Once your doodle hits seven or eight, joint support stops being optional. The Big Barker line of orthopedic beds (sold direct and on Amazon) is the category leader for orthopedic dog beds across all medium and large breeds. Seven inches of therapeutic foam, a ten year warranty, and a removable cover that survives the weekly wash.

Pick this if your doodle has any history of hip dysplasia, ACL surgery, or arthritis. Joint pain in the morning is the first sign your bed has lost its support, and it is usually a year or two before you notice.

Best calming or anti anxiety bed

The donut style faux fur calming beds sold by brands like Best Friends by Sheri (the Calming Shag bed) work surprisingly well for anxious doodles. The high bolster wall around the perimeter recreates the burrow feeling that puppies remember from their litter pile. The faux fur surface mimics the texture of mom.

Pick a calming bed if your doodle paces at night, struggles with thunder, or tends toward separation anxiety. Pair it with a weighted blanket for added effect. Goldendoodles especially respond to the burrow shape.

Best travel bed for Goldendoodles

A flat, foldable bed that lives in the trunk solves more problems than any other accessory. Hotels, in laws, friends with no dog, beach days, vet waiting rooms. Mango's car bed is a P.L.A.Y. mat version of his home bed so it smells right and reads as familiar.

The trick to a good travel bed: a removable cover that survives a beach rinse. The fabric should also dry in the back seat in one day, not three.

Best cooling bed for Goldendoodles in summer

Goldendoodles run hot. The double coat that makes them snuggly in winter makes them miserable in summer, especially in places like Las Vegas. A raised mesh dog cot (Kuranda or similar) is the unsung hero of summer doodle ownership. Air circulates under the dog instead of getting trapped, and the surface itself stays cooler than a foam bed.

The cot lasts almost forever, hoses off in 30 seconds, and is worth the slightly clinical look for the comfort it delivers during the hot months. We move Mango's into the bedroom from June through September.

What we'd avoid in a Goldendoodle bed

  • Cheap polyfill beds with no removable cover. Within three months they smell, the fill clumps, and you cannot wash them without ruining the shape. Throw away money.
  • Beds with rope or fringe trim. Doodles untangle the trim within two weeks and the threads end up in the dog. Smooth, finished edges only.
  • Memory foam without a moisture barrier. Even the cleanest doodle has a wet paw incident eventually. The cover should have a waterproof layer or zip off easily for wash.
  • Tiny beds for fluffy dogs. The fluff makes the dog look smaller than he is. Measure the dog stretched out, add four inches, and shop for that size.
  • Light cream colors on a golden coat dog if you do not want to see every speck. Doodles shed enough that light bedding shows it. Buy a color a step darker than the coat.

How many beds does a Goldendoodle need?

Most doodle households end up with three. The main bed (usually a P.L.A.Y. or Wild One in the living room), the bedroom bed (a calming or cot style depending on the dog), and the travel mat (foldable, washable, lives in the car). A fourth bed in the kitchen or office area is common too.

Washing a Goldendoodle bed without ruining it

Three rules:

  • Always remove the cover and wash separately. Never wash the foam or fiber insert. The cover needs cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent.
  • Air dry the cover. Heat shrinks the fabric and the cover stops fitting the foam. A drying rack and a ceiling fan beats the dryer.
  • Wash every two weeks minimum. Doodle coat oil builds up on bedding faster than it does on people.

Quick FAQ

Should a Goldendoodle sleep in a crate? Until they are reliably housebroken (usually around six to nine months) yes. After that it is owner preference. Many adult doodles still prefer the crate as a den even when the door stays open.

Do Goldendoodles like soft or firm beds? Most prefer medium soft. Adult doodles with any joint history shift toward firm orthopedic foam. Puppies usually prefer plush and burrow shapes.

Are elevated beds good for Goldendoodles? In summer, yes, especially in hot climates. The airflow underneath is the difference. In winter, a regular cushioned bed is more comfortable.

What does Mango sleep on? A P.L.A.Y. Lounge bed in the living room, a Wild One crate pad in the bedroom, and a foldable travel mat in the car. Full setup is on Mango's favorites page.
